SYLHETI / SYLHETI-NAGRI / SYLOTI (R) LANGUAGE - 067
Sylheti, also known as Syloti or Sylheti Nagri, is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the Sylhet Division of northeastern Bangladesh, as well as in some parts of the Assam province in India. Additionally, it is spoken among the Sylheti diaspora in the United Kingdom and other regions around the world. Belonging to the Eastern Indo-Aryan language group, Sylheti shares several linguistic similarities with Bengali, which is the official language of Bangladesh.
The language has its unique script known as Sylheti Nagri, although it is not widely used in contemporary times. Instead, speakers often use the Bengali script for written communication. Sylheti has distinctive phonological and lexical features that differentiate it from standard Bengali, reflecting the linguistic diversity present in the Indian subcontinent. Efforts to promote and preserve Sylheti culture and language, especially in diaspora communities, have gained momentum in recent years.
